Ian H's scenes don't seem to work when I try to apply the skins. Yes, I'm on the correct material ID and diffusing a bitmap image over it etc. etc. but it still doesn't work.
This is with the FZ50 scene, any ideas?

In what way doesn't it work eddie? My FZ50 in the round 5 skin challenge thread was rendered using the exact same model.. I just cloned the car and changed the lighting to create the new scene. Do you have Brazil? the skin material for example is a brazil material and IIRC and won't come out well if not rendered with Brazil (Brazil materials all come out solid black when rendered with FinalRenderer for example). If this isn't the problem, can you post your render? might help try and locate the problem Regards, Ian

When I change the bitmap layered on the model nothing happens at all. I'm not even sure the skin material is even working because of the shitty 3ds Max model previewing. Umm...I'll go get some screens of the material settings. EDIT: The images are in step by step order: Link 1Link 2Link 3Link 4Link 5Link 6I'm a 3dsMax dunce but it seems pretty obvious that the materials not being supported means there's a version eroor somewhere or similar. Help...

I had that problem today in my FO8 scene. When I changed the skin, nothing happend, and when assigned the material again, the wrong texture was used, doesn't matter which mat id I've used...
But I got it working. Select a face of the material with the skin, and then click - I think it was "Select by ID" right on top at the smoothing group options. Now detach all selected faces by clicking on the detach button. Assign the material again and set the material id to the needed value (skinmaterial) and it should work...
Weird bug...

eddie.. under the material spheres, there's a blue / white chequered cube icon.. if you click on the M button for the diffuse map slot to get to the skin / bitmap settings.. that icon should be enabled.. if you hit it.. you should see a VERY rough version of your skin be applied to the car (rough as only for previewing).. but this might help work out at least whether you're getting the skin on the car or not A test render would be good along with the material screens if possible to see what the actual results look like, this could help too Make sure the renderer in the F10 window in the Assign Renderer section at the bottom of the Common tab is set to Brazil too.. else things won't look right (this is set by default in all my scenes for both general and materials) Regards, Ian

Hmm.. what's that red text say across the material balls eddit? that's different to what I get (I get something along the lines of 'brazil doesn't contain material preview function' or words to that effect.. that looks suspiciously wrong.. but check out that cube toolbar button I mention as that'll at least confirm you have the skin loaded and applied to the car Thunder: Interesting bug.. can't say I've come across that one (yet?).. sounds like a real PITA though as not a solution you might immediately think of Regards, Ian

The red text says 'not supported'. It was the checkered cube button that wasn't enabled. It works now...but the render isn't at it's optimum settings. Any idea's on quick changes to make it look nicer? I changed the Skylight Colour to 1.6 from 1.3 in the Brazil Luma Server as most people suggest...do you think it looks better or worse for this? Also how do you change rim colour on your scenes...it's not the same as the others I have.

ahh cool cool.. the message is about the same then (brazil doesn't seem to support material previewing in the material editor) The luma server settings will be different per scene really.. I think Grudd's tute leaves it at the default 1.0.. I increased the value to 1.3 the other day during some lightng tests.. but due to me increasing that value.. you'll also notice the output RGB value for the reflection plane is set to 2.3 ratehr than the normal 3.0.. else things become too "whitewashed". I think you render looks a little bright tbh.. but that doesn't mean it's wrong.. neither do all eyes see the same image.. but it's certainly not _overly_ bright and the skin looks really cool The background colour (hit the '8' key to bring up env settings) can also play a role. By default, I set this to white.. but try changing it to black and render again.. the darker / shadow areas will become darker.. this might improve things a little now since you've increased the luma skylight value. You can also try an image here.. the reason things become darker with a black background is the background is actually reflected into the scene.. so by adding a background image, you can get some funky effects As for the rims.. click the 'M' button next to the Reflect map. You;ll see the top of the 2 colour boxes is (almost) black and the bottom white. Have a play with these values.. changing the top black one to red would make the wheels look red.. but if you want them black.. try lowering the white value to a dark grey Regards, Ian

Yeh it all works, thanks again Ian, I'm just getting my render ready for the Round 5 competition.
Thanks again.

One more addendum to what ian wrote: In the environment settings, you can also change the "Ambient"-color. It has a huge effect on how bright or dark (or colorful ) the render looks.

I don't think the mirror in the GT has the right color.. just a little bug... ^^ And don't you think the rims reflect too much? But great car paint material... oO
