Im not really satisfied with the grill tough the "blades" should be more thick, i'll have another go at it later, and yeah as for trasparent layer, you mean alpha channel such as the sunroof thing? i had something along those lines in my head, i'll see how feasible that really is, tough And yeah i might release it when its finished cheers

I think he meant like a template or overlay PNG to add these details to his skins

wait, what? can you add/remove body paneling using alphas? I didn't know LFS had them.

DDS files use alpha layers. So while you can skin with alpha layers, you can't upload them to LFS world. I meant alphas for the car though. I wish scawen and them would make an alpha layer for the car individually and a reflection alpha so you can add/drop reflections (for mud or flat paint) On the garage side, those are the nicest sidewalls I've ever seen! superb!

It's one of those 'discoveries' people have made - there's actually several relatively nice examples of sunroofs on the LFS forums utilizing the DDS alpha channels. I'm not sure if this was a discovery the devs intended or not, though.

No it is nothing discovered/intended by the devs, dds files can utilise an alpha layer, it's a handy coincidence of this file type. The tyre sponsors use a similar method - the area around the tyre sponsor is transparent leaving only the logo visible. This way several different sponsors can be applied to one tyre texture without the need for several textures. This is a property of dds files (and some other types of files) and its application was always possible for other dds textures. You can save dds files without an alpha layer too, if desired. Theoretically it should be possible to make an alpha layer for reflections (but I'm not sure how good they would look compared to the current 3D reflections in LFS), or at least for dirt, mud etc. Perhaps in future we will see our cars and their windscreens become grubby over time during a race? It's an area that warrants more exploration for sure. I'm sure there is some discussion here on our forum somewhere from a couple of years ago, about using alpha layers for transparency and other overlays. I really don't know much more about it than I have mentioned here. I don't think any of us ever thought of a good application for skinning using transparencies. I never even came close to considering sun roofs, but somebody recently did and some good results have ensued.

Update! Almost finished i guess, everything is excessively stretched (watch the O's in yokohama) so i'll have to fix thing up. Also, still have to add the alpha layer which will give all the " |||||| " on the rubber a nice effect (from closeup at least). All in all, its hardly recognizable from a distance, useful for screenies at best ¬_¬

It seems to me, though, that in many sims the alpha channel controls reflectivity rather than transparency (at least for the body of the car) so I never really thought about transparencies, either.

I guess the tire is finished, what do you guys think? Anything to fix? Again, its 1024x1024, no need to pull a 2048 since nobody zooms that much into tire sidewalls. Btw its not a fidel replica. <_<
