Bit of a random question... Does anyone know the best flight-sim for skinning? I'm wondering if there is one one that 'supports' skinning like LFS does or at least where templates are available and files are easy to replace?
I don't have the money to fill a room with cockpit parts or the time to learn to use them but I do have the urge to skin a plane...
Thanks.

I know there are plane skinning communities but I've never delved any deeper than that. My reasoning was like yours - I didn't want to get sucked into another sim genre and have to buy all that gear.
Could be fun to skin some aircraft. Check google.

Good plan I was just sure someone on here had mentioned them, no worries. Cheers.

I do paint aircrafts from time to time For the most payware aircrafts there are layered paintkits available, check the developer's homepage (eg PMDG). A lot of freeware developers do have paintkits, too, although some of them are just plain planes (no pun intended). Also, the mapping can be quite difficult on some planes, like you have to cut your final design into 3-5 pieces, mirror them etc. Never skinned for X-Plane, but IIRC FSX uses the dds format, so you need the DDS plugin and FS9 uses Extended Bitmaps, so you'll need the a freeware tool called DXT2BMP. If you want to I can post some screenshot of the planes I did in the past, but they are not high quality cause a) mostly it was a pain in the ass and b) I did them just for me and they are not intended to be shown in public

I do wish HAWX had some sort of skinnability, even of the Forza Motorsport 2 variety. Even though it was rudimentary, i did have alot of fun, and probally spent more time skinning than racing. the simple shapes forced you to get extra creative with layering and placement but it did the trick afterall. any games you know of (similar to HAWX) with some painting allowed?

Ah...that must be what I remembered, thanks. It sounds messy though I've got both the plugins mentioned, I'll have a look through your suggestions, thanks again.

I think you'll find very few games have such clean streamlined skinning procedures as LFS, in any genre.

Yeah, shame really. I remember when I first found Tommy Vercetti's clothes as a jpeg in a Vice City folder, I was like...Ooh, I can change this!

Hey Tim, a while ago we set up an IL2 server (old game but still quite fun) and I looked into skinning with it, looks to use very similar templates to lfs : I haven't really had time to have ago at starting a skin yet or even look into how the skinning system works, all the planes are old war planes so not sure if its what your after, heres a couple of links i found while I was looking into it : Helpful skinning forum : mission4today.com/index.php?name=ForumsPro&file=viewforum&f=9A list of templates/kits : aviaskins.com/Default.aspx?lang=en

ooh...that looks promising, cheers Gav, I'll look into that. Yeah, war planes aren't really my thing but I could always funk it up a bit and the wear-and-tear aspect will be fun (like my bangers!)
If nothing else I'm intrigued by the 'Snuff' layer :S

Brilliant, was just in need of such templates. Not much into skinning planes but I'll probably give it a go. Artsy ofcourse.
