Hi all, I've just thrown together a very basic and quick guide on creating a simple HDRI lighting effect as per many of my own renders. Please note, it's far from an indepth tute and if you really have no idea about 3DS, it may assume a little too much (although it's not complicated for this simple version). Anyways.. the guide's posted < dsrc.digiserv.net/forum/showthread.php?t=557> including a download for HDRIShop (free tool) and a sample HDRI probe The end result? Hopefully it'll be of some use to someone Regards, Ian

Hi Ian, I went to this turorial using my own scene. Afterwards I got the problem, that my scene is completely "overlightened".. The car is almost white and I have no clue about how to get this solved. I did it (I think so) exactly like described in your tutorial. Here's the picture:

Hi Vortex... What's your Brazil Luma Sever skylight value at? my scenes default to 1.3 and using 64 for the RGB level for the HDRI probe. Also, do you have any reflection planes visible in the scene? If so, you'll be best off deleting / hiding them as they create a rather matt effect when using HDRI and give off too much light. Other than that, my normal settings are a black background in the env settings when using HDRI with Lighttracer set with 2 bounces in the advanced render tab (F10 window) and all the other GI settings etc I leave at their default of 1. Also, do you have any other lights in the scene? The guide I made just uses the standard white luma skylight set at 1.3. Hope this offers some possibilities Regards, Ian

Ian.H: I had to decrease the rgb value to less then 32... even with 1.3, 64 is really too much! I'm using 1.6, 25 RGB and I think 0.7 in the curve at the bottom... and the 0.3 difference in the luma settings can't cause that much problems... >< VorTeX: do what i've done, decrease the rgb value until it fits..

First of all thanks for your suggestions. Ian.H: No there are no reflection planes, I removed any existing. The RGB value is at 64 and also the skylight multiplier is at a value of 1,3, so I will try decreasing the RGB value to something about 32 as thunder suggested. Hope this will work Also I will set the Background color to black. I'll give you some feedback this evening

Depends on what lighting I'm looking for really thunder.. sometimes I use less, sometimes more. My monitors old too, maybe I don't see things quite as bright on it That said, I'm a 3DS n00b.. only really worked with it for a few months on and off and the lighting was the most painful aspect (some of my early / failed attempts on RSC which are... lol scary ). Gonna try some more experiments soon with FinalRenderer and Maxwell and see how the results differ from Brazil Vortex.. the white background will lighten the darkened areas of the car.. so a black reflection on chrome would look more greyish.. again depending on the scene depends on whether I choose black or white. My default scenes all have a white background, but for HDRI, I normally pick a dark colour. It won't remove all of the whiteness.. but it might help define some areas better. As thunder says, try lowering the RGB level of the probe until it looks good. I dunno what probe you used.. but different probes also require different RGB level values depending on their light sources too There's a much more indepth tutorial at < www.splutterfish.com/sf/contrib/tutorials/gabry_hdri_tut/_contents/index.html> and what I used to start with HDRI which might be more use to you if you already have understandings of 3DS and the likes.. the small guide I threw together I was hoping to simplify a little for people who just wanted to "wash n go" Regards, Ian

I know this tutorial already, but it won't work... And yes, I used Mental Ray...
