I'm having a bit of difficulty getting clean stripes I think it happens when I save the file to a jpg. If I zoom in on the jpg I can see where it introduces 2 or three new colours between the stripe and the car colour. Is there a way of converting to jpg without this happening or is it a case of touching up the jpg after conversion. At the moment I'm using the gimp with 100% quality setting to create the jpg from a PSD file.
Thanks for your help

Thanks for your help Yes, JPG compression will blur the lines a bit, it is unavoidable when converting to JPG format. Creating the skin at a higher resolution may help a little. A few questions: - are you using our Pro Kits (ie: 2048 x 2048)? - are you making a 2048 x 2048 skin?

I was quite impressed when I saw 5 replies so quickly, now I feel a little dissapointed I have been using ur pro kits which I've found incredibly useful. I initially resize to 2560 x 2048 to do the design then scale the image to 1024x1024 and export a copy as a jpg for the skin.

1024 skins don't provide nice crisp lines, generally, so the issue might just be one of size. Gimp may have different settings for scaling, as well, and choosing a different one may suit your needs better? IIRC PSP did this. I'm not sure about PS as I've never looked before scaling, but in PSP some options produced nicer results. Been years since I've touched that app, though.
Does the problem come with it being saved as a jpg file, or with the scaling itself? Can you post an example of this so we can see exactly what you mean?

Here is a rendering of the skin you can also see where the blue has blurred with the orange on the edge of the stripe and where the side section meets the front and the top. ps any other constructive criticism of the skin would be appreciated

It's a resolution problem. My first guess since you're resizing it down to what more than 4 times its original size. Try to export the 2560x2048 jpeg file and you should see a big difference. If that doesn't help I think GIMP should have some Image Interpolation settings. Photoshop has this, and have some settings for gradients, image reduction and enlarging. The one for image reduction is called Bicubic Sharper if that helps. EDIT:: Also very nice work Bunta, epic

Thanks for the tips guys. I've been playing around a bit with it and I'm pretty confident I have the best scaling option enabled (cubic). I also noticed some advanced settings for exporting jpgs and turning off subsampling has made quite a big difference. It looks much better on the skin file; I'll see if it's noticeable in game or rendering

Just remember, as long as the file is a JPG there will always be some distortion and bleeding. For your renders you could make a higher resolution skin for that purpose and/or use a lossless format like BMP.
For skins to be used in-game, most of us use 2048 x 2048 JPGs instead of 1024 x 1024.

Renders may also show up more of an issue as there's various settings with the material itself that can affect things. I've done some skins in 4096x4096 res for rendering and the lines have still become blurred to hell. I had to edit things like AF for the material to help. Cameras I believe can also make a difference. Obviously this is unrelated to ingame quality though Regards, Ian

I think the render was causing the issues with the blurring between the side and the front. The stripes do look a lot cleaner now I've turned off the subsampling when converting to a jpeg. Here are some screenshots from in game with a 1024x1024 skin.
