So I've got the free version which is limited to a crippling 512x384 and I'm wanting more!!! LOL So I got to messing around with the standard renderers that came with 3DS and figured I would see what results I could get. For the life of me, I can't get my head around the lighting so you'll probably find immediate fault with that. But I was happy with the fact that I got shadows under the car - something I was just not getting until I checked "something!" LOL I know the majority of us use Brazil - I would too if it was an option but for those that don't, what setups are you using? This is using the default Scanline renderer...

Theres quite a few plugin renderers out there, the main ones i've seen people use are brazil, Vray, and final render.
Also, if you have a look in the 3d tutorial thread, i posted a max script (BIGRender) that allows you to "bypass" the brazil res by splitting the image into 512x384 chunks, which you can stitch together in photoshop if you need it. Bit of a pain in the arse, but it works.

Loon3y, good call on the BigRender application, I now can have 1000x750 res images from Brazil! Thanks for the tip man!

Remember too that these are only 3rd party renederers. Max has its own renderer which works at high res, you don't have to use Brazil for great results, in fact with patience Max will give you better results than Brazil, in my opinion.

I'm starting to agree with you Bunta, I'm using the renderers that came with 3DS more and more. I've still got a ways to go though. One of the problems I have is with the default renderers "bluring" the decals on the skin - they're not as crisp as they are when rendered with Brazil. I'm sure this is just a setting I haven't figured out yet so I'll stick with it. ;D

yes.. alot of patience, brazil and vray and final render render much faster though (.. just not textures of blueprints while making cars) as for brazil, its like the 'baby' compared to vray, the setup is less advanced.. it also has fewer settings that have any effects
it really depends what your looking for; brazil; just install and use it strait off the bat vray; well.. be prepared to take notes! scanline; .. render while your away, because its gonna take a while, and you most likely wont get what you want with it
@zed what type of antialiasing are you using.. area? if so thats why its blurring also, in the materials, go to your skin and lower the blurring a little (this is MIP bias blur, not gaussian blur) but it should help

I'm using the following settings currently. Rendering 1280x960 images takes about 40 minutes with these settings... I don't think I'm suffering from blurry decals any more but the edge enhancing Catmul-Rom filter seems to give me "Jaggies" around the edges of the render sometimes - especially when the contrasting colors are very different. What filter settings should I use - or have given other folk good results?

usually you get the best outcome with mitchel netravali; thats what i use, and its perfect, not to sharp.. blurs right, and not to blurry
