On an Alpha channel, black is typically invisible and white is typically opaque, so the majority of the window should be a very dark grey, and you name/number/other decals should be white. White I'll typically do is duplicate all the layers that are of my added decals, merge all the duplicates together then select them (CTRL+click on the layer should do this, I think) then go onto the alpha channel and fill this marqueed area with white.
The type of DDS file you use will affect how it handles this alpha channel, too. I'm not sure what it should be saved at for rFactor, though, so you'll have to try a couple different things.
