Hey
I've been trying to find how to import LFS tracks into 3DS. I've found a thread about it on RSC, but the CMX of Blackwood was never released publically as far as I know, and I couldn't find the SMX exporter/importer which it appears existed.
Does anyone know where I might find these files? I'd love to be able to use the tracks (or portions thereof) as scenes for rendering, but until I can import them I can't know if it's a workable solution.
Does anyone happen to have the tracks already imported?

Only BL was said to be released, dunno what happened with it. The other track were as far as i know not intended to release.

I dunno of any, but I was gonna ask around soon meself for the BL1 mesh if possible so I could convert it along with the cars.. I love BL1 If you do come across it (I may well just ask the devs in a few weeks anyway as I'd like "written permission" as such for a conversion), lemme know please! Regards, Ian

Yes, written permission for the tracks might be the way to go. I too had heard about some one exporting a few tracks but never did see any of them. So might as well just ask the devs for one

The devs are good as gold! I started to convert the cars (XRT is about 80% converted with physics and the FXR is about 10% done, no physics). I had no probs at all with permission for those at all (I didn't need to contact them and ask apparently, but did out of respect) but having Blackwood in "all games" would be great I've seen some tracks in 3DS by way of screenshots, but that's as much as I know on the subject. If not, looks like tristan has some modeling to learn Regards, Ian

Haha, indeed.
Well I hope you get/find a track to use in the 3DS...because cars would look great in 3DS on a track rendered with teh cars.

It's not rendered.. just a viewport screenshot.. but I might release a section of it for rendering purposes once I get some more of it built Regards, Ian

Pretty nice job there Ian. Why don't you just make a whole track?

I did, but scrapped most of it as I wasn't happy.. what you see above is all I have left. If you excuse the poor texture quality (I hadn't set the trilinear mip setting properly hence the blurriness and scaled the grass textures waaaaay too much they now look like mushy peas) and the crappy sky dome (didn't know what I was doing completely the other day when making this vid).. but: < tk.digiserv.net/tmp/rF/ashtown_links_f3.7z> (9Mb DivX) is what became of the above. All in all, took a couple of hours to build but I'll sort the above out into a nice scene that can be used for rendering as I keep chopping and changing my mind about track layout so haven't decided on a final design yet, heh. Would be cool to build a track for LFS one day if it becomes possible and I learn how properly All textures are from LFS too.. some might be kinda low-res, but they certainly look nice Regards, Ian

Well I like the way it looks. of course...If you ever want a track to work on. I drew a track on a napkin about 2 years ago and I know it would be a fun one to race on. Its an above view of the track too haha. But I know if anybody took the above view I drew and pretty much did what you are doing....One hell of an LFS track it would be As for the track you got there(or part of the track Its just a nice concept. Other than that, I'm just a fan of your work Ian. Keep up the good work, Corey "Moby"

Sketching things out first is definitely the best way. I actually started this track project in hopes that I can learn enough to start it from scratch again, but properly as I wanted to build my littlen a simplish track to drive around (including a drag strip.. which is where the road leading off through the wall was intended to head to as a multi-config track). I drew the layout in Illustrator then imported that into 3DS as a spline, converted it into something solid and scaled it up.. voila! one track outline to follow while piecing all the bits together (there's about 40 sections in the completed loop). I'll be fixing the above section to add things like pit garages and some scenery which should then fill the scene out a bit and also finally texture that bridge Like everything, seems the actual track building isn't so hard.. infact, a damn sight easier than working with cars.. however, getting a decent result at the end (which I _really_ failed in the vid) is another story The worst part about the pic above I think is the materials. They were setup to export into a game so don't use any standard 3DS type materials.. but I'll get this sorted out soon and do a proper render.. should make the whole thing look 50 times nicer Regards, Ian

Good deal then. As for scenery, as a personal preference I have always liked tracks that had a type of city feel to them. Like having buildings around them. So you might even try to fit like a couple of buildings in there. Other than that Trees and mountians always look good for backgrounds Hopefully you get the materials to look better. I can only imagine how nice a track render can be with the prober utencils. Keep up the good work Ian, Corey"Moby"

Thanks My aim was a kinda street(ish) track that was a combination of both country lane style and village / town. The building that's there atm adn the 2 traffic lights were mainly as a test to see how things worked, but I'll be adding more buildings like that, some houses and various other roadside objects (bollards / bins.. whatever ). It's currently only a strip of pieces butted together but the plan from here was then to build outwards to create hills and a general scenery area of which I can "plant" trees and whatnot. I'd never looked at or considered track building before.. always been into seeing what I could do with cars instead, but this whole track stuff is kinda fun, be it for something drivable or simply to make something to render with.. come to think of it, anything 3D related is cool Another scene I was working on.. spent many hours on the lighting with this so far (although not recently).. rendered with finalRender: Anyways, enough of me hijacking tristan's thread (sorry tristan) heh.. although I could go on for hours.. 3D rocks 8) Regards, Ian

I've got a version of the OLD blackwood, if ya want it? It needs all the uvmaps/textures setting up though, so i never bothered with it. www.dpostill.karoo.net/downloads/blackwood.rarMight be worth a shot posting a request thread for an importer/cmx track files on lfs forum.
