how do i add background colour/picture instead of white?
the picture seems to be added but is cut off with white background behind car. im using scenes from ds autos.

In the top menu go to rendering/environment. You can click on the colour swatch to choose a new background colour or you can use an environment map by checking the use map option and then clicking on the environment map button, choosing the bitmap option and browsing for your background image of choice (can be any supported image format; jpg, png etc).
While using the environment map is the easiest way to change the background, please be aware that no matter what angle you render from, the background will always appear the same. There are many other funky tricks that you can do with environment maps but they are too detailed to cover here.
Another alternative is to create a large plane and map the image to it. More advanced techniques include large domes that cover the whole scene (map a sky texture to the inside of the dome, for example).
