Hi people, I'm using 3DS Max 8, and am a total n00b. I'm trying to follow an XFG tutorial I found, but the textures don't appear on the renders.... and when I go into the material editor, all the boxes are filled with a 'Unsupported' logo. On the main 3DS screen, the tyres are black and the rims grey, but the renders are just grey all over Am I missing plugin or summat? I've got Rio installed, and the CMX plugin. And another thing... is there a tutorial anywhere for using the 3DS Max renderer instead of Rio? Thanks in advance while I keep bashing my head on the keyboard, Drew

stop destroying your hardware. Like I said.. n00b... And a fool, it's 3DS Max 7.... :edit: and having issues with the downloaded scene not being Rio designed, but Brazil r/s.... And it all seems to be in one piece - and unskinnable. Sorry about this, but n00bcentral kicked me out for asking dumb questions... This is fun.....

Brazil textures are not properly compatible with Max's system of showing the materials as thumbnails. Only Max materials will appear in those boxes as thumbnails, Brazil materials won't be displayed there. This is normal.

Hey ho again people. I think I had this stuff sorted. Had. Anyway... Here's the thing. To skin these magnificent scenes, it's press M to bring up the materials editor, and scroll down to find the ADD NEW SKIN option, right? Here's the problem.... I don't get that option. No doubt I'm missing a switch or button or something, and your patience is really, really appreciated. It's frustrating because I had it sussed, and forgot how I did it. I'm using the scenes from ds autos, using 3DS MAX 7 and the full version of Brazil. The options I get when pressing M are: Basic Parameters - materials/ color/ transparency Bump mapping Displacement Global illumination parameters - Generate (send) Recieve About - Mental ray connection - Basic shaders Caustics and GI Extended shaders Advanced shaders Optimisation The drop down box next to the eye dropper (which I seem to remember having something to do with it) has one option: reflection_plane, and I've tried it with and without the body of the FZ5 selected (selection 19, right?). I'm looking for the one with the massive scroll down list (see, I told you I did it before), but I just don't seem to be able to find it

Try selecting the next square along in the 'brazil doesn't support......' area. If you notice, underneath that area, the selected material says 'reflection plane'. This is the material setting for the square plane sitting over the car which is used to generate those "studio reflections". Selecting the next material along should display a list of various sub materials (the text under that currently says 'reflection plane' should change to 'FZ50' or something IIRC for the FZ5), one of which will be the 'add skin' one you're looking for Regards, Ian
