I use gimp as I can't justify buying an expensive graphics program. It's pretty simple and seems to work on the same principles of other graphics packages. I'm still only up to using a fraction of its full potential. It's drawback is perhaps the roundabout way you might have to go to do something similar which you can find with one of the retail packages in a single click. That said I would recommend you visit www.gimptalk.com/index.php to check out techniques and plugins which save you a lot of time on special effects and create them consistently. A qualification I must make though is that my hands on experience with photoshop/paintshop pro is zero and any comparison I make is from reading about them. Here are my attempts at skinning with gimp if you'd like a few examples of its capabilities although in all honesty my work is probably not the best representative of that. skinnerz.proboards26.com/index.cgi?board=labs&action=display&thread=1130313245

Bumppp! Well, the GIMP is very simple, and that means it's very easy to use. I use GIMP, because i can't afford those 800€ Photoshops. GIMP even beats paint lol.

If I had to choose between GIMP and Paint, I'd definately go the gimp route. Of course, I Got Photoshop free from my old highschool, so I don't have to worry about the costs.

Yeah, Gimp is good. I use it, Ive used alot of it's potential.
The only downside would be that you can't use photoshop brushes, but th's great otherwise.

How do you bring up a layers box in the gimp? Sorry for veery late response + Bump. To get the layers box visible, Go into the "File"(Or that which is on the left side of Plug-In section thing, below the GIMP text) Then go into windows, when you are still watching the "file" thing. Then select layers.
