Here are some guidelines about choosing the right decals for your skin.
- Stick to a theme. Is it a racing skin? A street skin, a rally skin?... etc. Ask yourself what details would normally appear on such a skin. Should the skin have any decals at all? Small? Large? What colour? Size?
-Don't double up. When you look at real race livery, it is rare to see two competing tyre companies sharing the same advertising space on a race car as each other. You wouldn't normally be sponsored by two tyre companies, so having more than one tyre sponsor can look out of place. I'm sure you will find other examples where two rival companies would not appear on the same car.
-There's 2 sides to every skin. Check to make sure your decals fit on both sides of the skin. Irregular shaped decals can often fit perfectly on one side, but terribly on the other. Better to check it out right away than have to redesign the entire skin later.
-Repeat your theme. Try using different sizes of the same decals in different parts of the skin. So you may have a large decal of Brand X on the door, and a small version on the rear, or even the wing. Brand Y decorates the hood, a small space on the bumper, and a small space on the wing. Repeat the sponsors on your skin in a few (not too many) places to help sell the illusion of a real race car.
-Less is more. Decals alone will not be enough to make your skin great, some pattern or texture, an artistic theme will really make the difference, just like real race cars have their own patterns and areas of colour. So choose decals that compliment that artistic theme. Don't ruin one with the other.
-A box of decals that never runs out. It's called your brain. If you can't find the ideal decal for your skin and need something to finish off your theme, just design your own ficticious brand. Take your time, but have some fun with it too. Make a few sizes, use them here and there.
