The title says it all. Where do you all get your ideas from? I see alot of non-original schemes, ie, copies of real race cars. I've tried to search the net for race car examples and all I ever get is Nascar stuff. I have no idea what kinds of racing there is out there (what the names of the series are) to do a good search. My Mountain Dew car idea came from Jeremy Mayfield's Mountain Dew Nextel Cup car.

Everyday's life. Really, a car skin doesn't have to be a racing livery, nor have to base itself on a sponsor. btw, for racing resources - www.motorsports.com

Whatever look cool. I don't want to copy race cars, lots of other people do that already, plus you can't be as creative, so I only do a few that I really like. I usually just pick some colours slap on some cool looking designs and then change stuff until I get something I'm satisfied with. I've also drawn from toy cars and real tuner cars.

I started this thread a while ago. Now I'm asking about real race car designs. I'd like to do a few real cars to improve my Paintshop Pro'ing without having to come up with the design as well. I never was into watching much road course racing until recently (since I've started racing LFS). I don't know any of the racing series. Where can I find good picture examples of road racing cars? What are some of the racing series called so I can search better? Any time I search for something, all I get is Nascar stuff. Now, I am a long time fan of watching Nascar, but the paint schemes don't really fit to LFS. I'd like to find more car examples like we have in LFS. Hmm, just reread my original post there and realize I said the same thing up there, LOL. I thought I was saying something alittle different now. But anyways, if someone could post a list of different racing series or post a link of their favorite site for viewing good pictures of race cars I'd appreciate it. The one link posted above is a motorcycle accessory retailer and I didn't see any pictures anywhere.
Much appreciated, thanks.

I started skinning fro photos in a Tamiya r/c catalog. Some of the model sites have some good pics that save hunting through 120 far-off race photos of the back end of porsches taken by enthusiasts with motorsports websites. Try searching for model cars and die-cast collectables, that sort of thing.

mrodgers: Have a look at www.dtm.de which is a german racing series which may come close to Nascar series. On that page you will find 3 brand links and the team links itself, their sites do feature a lot of photos to work with. You may find a lot of brand logos they use on the logo thread somewhere else in this forum. The DTM series featured the Opel/Vauxhall Astra last year, which is also ingame. Opel replaced it this or maybe last season with the Vectra, which looks nearly the same. @al Heely: You said Tamiya - was it you who did the FZR Raybrig Skin? Seen it once ingame yesterday, very nice work it is. @topic: Personally, I don't like copying real life schemes that much, being a bit creative is way more fun for me. The "real" schemes that I would like to do are allready there, including that legendary team GULF skin. *thumbsup*

I have some handy advice for making real race car liveries.
Let's look first at some important considerations:
- First of all it is important that you have images of the real car taken from all angles. If you don't know what the front, back, or top looks like it is hard to do an exact job.
- Next it is important to make sure you can decipher what decals have been used. Close-up photos are best because some decals will be unfamiliar or very small.
- Lastly it is important to get the colours right. Cars are actually quite tricky to photograph due to the reflective and curvy nature of the bodywork on most vehicles. When you look at a photo of a car it is hard to know what the real colour is because reflections and shadows generate different shades of the base colour, when seen through the human eye.
Tips: Rather than decide on what livery you want to make and then go searching for pictures, it may be better to gather a lot of pictures first and only make the skin if you get enough angles and clear shots. It is frustrating to never find that last angle and not know what the car really looks like.
If you can't find out what some decals are it is sometimes a good idea to post them on the forum and ask others if they know.
To get the right colours you can use an eye-dropper tool to steal the colors from images, but be aware of reflections and shadows, try to understand how the colour has been changed by the light. Sometimes a visit to the team website or the sponsor's site can help with colour matching.

Here's quite a good collection of pictures. Not on every angles, but possibly something to give you ideas. home.planet.nl/~marceltencaat/Another one with hires wallpapers. Most of them are roadcars but there's some good pics of racing cars as well www.dieselstation.com

I think its a good idee to look up some sponsor brands (if u want to do a race car) and paint the car from the sponsors colors..Choose a main sponsor and a few small ones and build one around that theme, maybe a HP sponsored car would be blue and white with HP on the side of it or something like that. If u want to look at real race cars search for the GTR series, U have diffrent series from diffrent countrys, like Japan and USA. And u have WTCC, Formula 1, Champ car, WRC(rally), Nascar. U can look at bikes to. search for MotoGP and u will find lots of race bikes..oh well the world is full of race series just google on it Sorry for my bad english =/

Nice teazR, that's just what I'm looking for. Lots of good pics in that first link, thanks. Though, now that hockey has started, not sure if I'll have time to do much more skinning. But only 1 more race for NAL this season, so I guess I won't have to spend all my spare time practicing for that for a while until the next season starts up.
jockew, yea, that is what I want to do, pick a sponsor and do my own design, but I want to do some copying of real cars just to hone my Paintshop Pro skills. I'd like to do some designs of my own sponsor list, ie, all the equipment I use to race LFS. HP, CSOnline (my isp), JSP (employment), Intel, Logitech, ati (soon as I get a gfx card), etc. and rotate the main sponsor for the color scheme around those companies.

Hello all.
Nice to see my link in teazR's post. Most pictures on my site will be side view only, but i might have made pictures of different angles of the cars.
If you see a picture you would like to use for skinning and you need a different angle, just ask!
Oh btw, the page can also be reached by typing autosportpics dot com!
Greetings, Marcel ten Caat

The link above would be www.motorsport.com/photos/ (not motorsport s) There are pictures of most racing leagues but Al is right when he says there are tons of views not helpful at all. What I sometimes do is pick a design I might want to create and then search via driver name for more pics of that particular car. That way you don't get all those farfaraway angles. If motorsport.com doesn't give you what you're looking for, you might want to search via google picture search for more pics (use the car-/team-/driver-names and/or main sponsor that usually helps). Other than that take Bunta's advice. He's right .

Ah, yes, "motorsport.com" works much better than "motorsports.com" :-) Thanks
Linsen, that is exactly what I plan to do. I just need to figure out and find the cars that look good to search for their team/sponsor website. I did find one really nice looking Porsche I'd like to do.
Thanks all, alot of help up there ^ :-).
